Kennington History
Society
By the time you read this
our new ‘Society’ will be six months old and
following the very entertaining talk in June by
Russell Cherry about the
History of the River
Thames from it’s Source to Abingdon,
the group is
taking a summer break from the regular programme of invited
speakers.
This break allows a
progress report on the committee’s future plans for ,
the ‘Society’ related both to speaker’s subjects
and/or trips for 2004 and
about the research being undertaken for additional
publications.
Subjects under consideration
include the history of :- Radley
College,
Iffley Church, Christ Church Cathedral, Kennington’s Street Names,
Water Mills on the
Thames, Shopping in 19th Century Oxford,
The
Oxford
Canal, ‘Paper House’ at Redbridge & Transport in the Vale.
As far as future Society
publications are concerned, research is
continuing for two projects - *‘The Story of
Kennington’s 18 War Dead’
the known background of those brave young men named on
the village
war memorial and also Shirley Jones booklet entitled ‘Evacuees
in
Kennington’.
*With regard to the
first of these can I again appeal to anyone with
‘background
knowledge’ of Kennington’s War Dead to contact me.
The first planned event,
after the summer recess, will be talk entitled -
A Beginners Guide to
Researching your Family History to be held on
Monday
the 15th September 2003 at 7:45pm in the Methodist Church.
