History Society Report – November 2013

At the October meeting the Society had its latest visit from popular Warwickshire Speaker, Graham Sutherland, who gave an interesting illustrated talk entitled ’Women at Work’. As usual Graham laced his Talk with many amusing anecdotes. Perhaps the most disturbing part of the evening was the information that the groups of young children sent up chimneys in Victorian times to sweep them, were commonly run by women. Graham also told us about the complicated political structure which operated in large households which had to be enjoured by the many women that worked in service.

As we go to press Society members are looking forward to the November visit of another of their favourite speakers, Local Historian Liz Woolley, who will be giving an illustrated talk entitled ’The Late Victorian and Edwardian Buildings of Oxford’

‘this month’

booksOn Monday the 16th December 2013 in the Methodist Church starting at 7:45pm there will be a ’Book Browse’ when Graham Kirby ACIB will be bringing 3 crates of books which are recommended for researching and recalling Local and General History. This event is a bit of a departure for the Society but given the season it should be interesting to see a good selection of useful books which could make appropriate Christmas presents.
